Our Story
1974
Our Story Begins
In 1973, Edward Mele, an avid tennis player searching for a tennis court surface for his private courts, discovered Matéflex, a modular flooring used in professional European tournaments, including Grand Prix Masters events.
Edward and his brother Joseph Mele, acquired U.S. manufacturing rights and formed Matéflex-Mele Corporation in Utica, New York in 1974, becoming America's first modular tile manufacturer and pioneering the interlocking floor tiles industry. The original Classic tile launched that year as a revolutionary alternative to traditional tennis court surfaces. What began as a tennis solution quickly evolved into comprehensive and transformative athletic flooring for multiple sports.
